Nine organisations join forces in ROUND for more circular economy in Belgium.
To help tackle the growing climate challenges and put Belgium on the map as a European leader in the circularity of end-of-life products and goods, nine leading Belgian extended producer responsibility (EPR) organisations are uniting in ROUND. With a view to a circular economy, the brand-new alliance will raise awareness among citizens, businesses and the political world about sustainable and innovative ways to collect, process, recycle waste and reuse it where possible. ‘Everyone can individually contribute to a greener and sustainable future.’
The nine organisations that founded ROUND are Bebat, Febelauto, Fost Plus, PV CYCLE Belgium, Recupel, Recytyre, Valipac, Valorlub and Valumat. All are EPR organisations: they ensure that goods (and their packaging after use) are collected and processed efficiently. A key driver here is the environment: ecological processing and recycling methods help protect our natural resources.
Extended Producer Responsibility means that companies placing goods on the market are financially and/or organisationally responsible for the entire life cycle of those goods or their packaging.
Circular leader in Europe
‘That Extended Producer Responsibility works is clear. Individually, our organisations are already European champions in prevention, collection, reuse and recycling of various waste and material streams. We make it easy for citizens, consumers and companies to contribute to a better environment within a well-functioning ecosystem. Under the umbrella ROUND, we want to further strengthen our collective impact by making our commitment clear and increasing the individual clout of the nine members.’ - Francis Huysman, ROUND’s chairman.
Inspire behavioural change
ROUND's objective is multiple. The alliance is a platform for consultation, study and information exchange, with a shared commitment around the 3 Rs - 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'. In addition, the coalition will highlight the efforts of individual members and raise awareness about widespread behavioural change in product use and waste management.
"The environmental and recycling challenges are increasing day by day. By uniting under the banner of ROUND and demonstrating our collective commitment, we are setting an example and inspiring individuals, companies and communities to also do their individual bit for a greener and sustainable future!’" - Francis Huysman, ROUND’s chairman.
Professor Jean-Pascal van Ypersele (UCLouvain en ULiège) also applauds the launch of ROUND.
"The circular economy and the transition to a sustainable society are high on the European agenda. Belgium already holds a leading position in Europe when it comes to waste management. By joining forces in the ROUND alliance, the Belgian EPR organisations put themselves in an even better position to make a significant contribution to the requirements of the various regions, as well as helping to achieve the ambitious standards of the Green Deal."
